Tunes at Noon: Celebrating Talent and Bravery at Music for Lunch Bunch

By Karen Spurney
Music for Lunch Bunch, the quarterly school talent show, is a treasured JTD community event. Once fitting into the school day during lunch, the School now has four dedicated Music for Lunch Bunch assemblies throughout the school year, when our whole community comes together to watch students of all ages share their talents with one another.
On Tuesday, October 15, the JTD community was treated to performances by a variety of talented students, including dancers, a violinist, and a singer who played their own piano accompaniment. The courage it takes to step on stage in front of over four hundred peers is no small feat, yet even some of our youngest Grade 1 students marched onstage with their acts prepared, conquering their nerves. Whether they were first-time performers or returning favorites, each student brought something special to the stage. One Grade 3 guitarist shared that he performs again and again for that  “feeling of joy and relief after performing."

The sense of community was palpable during the group performances as well. Grade 4 students sang a song from their Identity Unit together as a class, and a Grade 6 Advisory Group performed a "synchronized swimming" routine set to a Strauss Waltz. With silent cues and belly flops to the floor, the Grade 6 students were rewarded with the sound of laughter from enthralled Kindergarten buddies in the front row.

For every performer, Music for Lunch Bunch is filled with memorable moments – listening to the Grade 6 Master of Ceremonies announce your name, watching the whole audience clap along to your music, or hearing your voice boom through the gymnasium speakers for the first time. No matter how the performance unfolds, our students know that they can trust their JTD family to support them. Audience members feel a great sense of pride as they watch their fellow Greyhounds display their courage in their moments on stage.

The John Thomas Dye School believes in the importance of providing opportunities for students to be brave and take risks in a nurturing and supportive environment, and Music For Lunch Bunch is a wonderful example of this. We look forward to seeing what creative acts our students will put together for the rest of the 2024-25 school year shows!
