Helping Hounds

By Sigita Newsom
John Dye Hall was buzzing with happiness as students eagerly assembled hygiene kits using family donations.
Each grade level was assigned a specific item, and we were overwhelmed by the amount of combs, nail files, bars of soap, etc. donated by each student. Students spent the morning crafting kind notes, writing messages such as, "You are strong! You are brave! You are loved!" with colorful markers. The hygiene kits were put together with such enthusiasm and thoughtfulness as students carefully chose the right shampoo scent and toothbrush color to add. One 6th grader said, "This was such a special event! I wish we could do it more often!" Together, JTD students, faculty, and staff assembled nearly 350 kits.

The kits will be donated to Aviva Family and Children's Services, a nonprofit organization that provides services in mental health, crisis intervention, foster and adoption, and interim housing for women and children seeking asylum. Currently they have 30 moms and 48 children living in their shelter. Learn more about Aviva here.

Thank you to our generous community for coming together to contribute to this project.
