Little Voices, Big Words: The Grade 1 Poetry Presentation

By Christina Rothenberg
After learning about different types of poetry, our Grade 1 students recently composed their own original poems and recited them in front of their families. Public speaking is an important part of a John Thomas Dye students’ journey, and each Spring, the Grade 1 Poetry Presentation provides an opportunity for some of our youngest students to practice public speaking in a fun and supportive environment.
Students began this unit by reading a selection of poems from the I Am series by Susan Verde. Students took time to reflect on what makes them unique before writing their own original “I Am” poem. While writing, they had the opportunity to think deeply about their beliefs, wonders, and hopes, while also learning how to expand their writing by adding in descriptive language.

Next, students read a selection of color poems from Hailstones and Halibut Bones. They learned how to use their five senses to write about different colors. Have you ever wondered what brown feels like or what blue tastes like? Our Grade 1 poets can tell you!

Then, students delighted in reading the humorous works of Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky as they learned about rhyming poems. Many of our poets incorporated playful language in their own rhymes!

Finally, our first graders delved into the world of acrostic poems, which use the letters in a word to begin each line of a poem. Students wrote their own acrostic poems using their first names – which is always a fun exercise for our Grade 1 learners!

To finish off this exciting unit, students chose one of their original poems to perform for an audience. They spent time refining their poem and then practiced reading their original piece to their peers. After weeks of preparation, our first graders proudly donned colorful berets and one by one stepped onto the stage in John Dye Hall to recite their poems to a packed house. Our young poets were so proud, beaming as they shared their work with their families.
